62.  FOR SALE: Edson Schock Catboat. This catboat is a very rare, maybe the only one left, 13'6", early 40's, probable Edson Irwin Schock, Cape Cod style catboat. The boat was designed and probably built by Edson Schock in the early 40's at Salt Pond in southern Rhode Island. Edson Schock was a well known designer and builder of boats in Rhode Island, and was the author of "How to Build Small Boats" copyright 1952. A slightly revised version of this cat boat is shown on page 119 of 'The Cat Boat Book". The second owner purchased the boat at a Succotash Rd boat yard on the Salt Pond in June of 1957, and sailed around Narragansett Bay and as far as Cape Cod and the Vineyards. The boat was sailed on Lake George in New York in the early 60's. Various changes and improvements were made to the boat as time went on. Originally the boat had red Egyptian cotton sails, and the cuddy cabin was smaller with no port holes and a rounded front. A builders plate was on the boat at that time but was lost during cabin overhaul in the 60s. I am the third and present owner, and I purchased the boat in 1980 and sailed her out of Wickford Harbor in Rhode Island until a refit was required and a complete overhaul was performed in 1994. We moved to mid Missouri in 1996, and I have been sailing the boat on the Lake of the Ozarks in the Laurie area. She is cedar on oak, with a new keel, center board trunk, lower transom, deadwood, sister frames, and was re-fastening in 1994. She has a Thurston sail, oak mast hoops, red bronze and brass fittings, cuddy cabin with oval ports, varnished decks cabin and cockpit sides, cedar on oak carvel hull, barn door rudder and a British seagull motor and trailer. This may be the only surviving Edson Irwin Schock cat boat in existence. I do not see another on the cat boat register of the Catboat Association. Any information regarding this early Edson I. Schock cat boat would be welcome, and would be added to the historical information available on early Rhode Island cat boats. More detailed information as well as more pictures can be seen on my web site at http://johnmaciver.tripod.com or is available on request. The boat is available and ready for the water at $6,500 or best reasonable offer. John MacIver, PO Box 653, Stover, MO, 65078. (573)377-2775 or e-mail macivj@wildblue.net.
