throat saddle lining

I have a 1997 M-22 and the throat saddle always seems to chip the paint off on the mast where it rests when sailing. It is lined currently with what looks to be white plastic. I asked Geoff Marshall about using a piece of rug and he said that’s an option however sometimes the gaff won’t lower as quickly. Anyone use rug? Or a piece of leather?

      thanks

Hoist the sail all the way up and look at where the mast is being scratched. Is the scratch mark under the saddle? Is it above the saddle? If the scratching is above the saddle, it may be that the gaff is pressing against the throat halyard block just above the saddle. That’s where my mast is scratched.

I have the same problem..I just repainted the spars so they look OK now but they will be beat up by the end of the season. I ran out of time. I wanted to experiment with Armor UP clear automotive paint film but have not had a chance.

I am planning to use automotive clear paint protector film. I bought some from Amazon called Armor Up but could not find it this spring. I will post my results.
