How to Write for the Bulletin
Have something to share? Writing for the Bulletin is easy. Take a look at the topics write something up!
We use Microsoft Word. Include (digital) pictures too. Indicate where you think they should go in the body of your article (the printers will take care of actually putting them there).
Email your article and photos as separate files: content (.doc or .docx) and photos (.jpegs), to the appropriate contributing editor. (Find a list of the current Contributing Editors and their contact information near the front of the most recent CBA Bulletin.)
The Bulletin is published three time a year.
Stories for the Fall Bulletin should be submitted by Labor Day.
Stories for the Winter Bulletin should be submitted by Early December
Stories for the Spring Bulletin should be submitted by mid-March.
- Letters to the Editor. The readership is encouraged to provide feedback on current or past issues. These may be forwarded to the appropriate Contributing Editor. Replies from the Contributing Editor or other source (e.g., the author of the article commented on) may also be included.
- Over the Bar. Here is where the Bulletin honors members or their loved ones who have recently passed away. Past editions have featured full stories about the member and his or her life. Pictures are great too.
- Yarns and Adventures. Who doesn’t love a good sea story?. In particular are stories of trips and voyages where catboats are involved. This column has also featured poems and artwork.
- Feature Articles. This is an open area available for a multitude of feature articles. We have sought and received some excellent features over the years on all manner of subjects. The editors manages these.
- Race/Rendezvous Results. This section is used to report the results of the races our members have participated in.
- Piloting, Navigation, and Electronics. This section covers navigation techniques and reports on the latest in electronic navigation equipment. This includes navigation using visual aids, dead reckoning, Global Positioning System (GPS), and other methods of getting from place to place.
- Navigation. This section covers thee skills, methods, tools, and techniques of piloting and offshore navigation as well as stories of particular feats of navigational skill.
- Sailing Techniques & Seamanship. This section discusses various techniques and topics pertinent to the proper handling of catboats including maneuvering, anchoring, mooring, sail handling, etc.
- Boat Building & Maintenance. This section discusses then many ways of building and maintaining both wood and fiberglass catboats. Especially favored are stories of the building, refitting, and restoring catboats.
- Cruising. In this section is devoted to sailing adventures that cover a longer period than those in yarns and adventures and including the days and nights of the trip, what happened along the way, who they met, situations they got into and out of, and what it meant to them.
- Book Reviews. This section provides reviews of new and old books of interest to our readers.
- Catfood. This section features recipes enjoyed by our members. All sorts of recipes have been featured, but of great interest are simple ones that can be taken or prepared on board. Especially prized are those that can be made with simple ingredients that can be found just about anywhere.
- Barn Door Postings. This section is for short items of interest i.e., things that you might find posted on a club bulletin board.
- Stray Cats. This section contains stories of catboats nearly lost to time or neglect who found new life with a new owner or boat builder.
- Short Tacks. Short pieces and words of wisdom are included here.
